Distinguished and Famous people from Hume

Sir William John Clarke

Pastoralist and philanthropist William John Clarke began building Rupertswood at Sunbury in 1874. The mansion became a conspicuous expression of colonial wealth and a setting for social gatherings. His broader activities included charitable giving and public life, while the property later became associated with Salesian education. Sunbury provides the direct local connection within today’s City of Hume. The surviving estate helps make the scale of Clarke’s pastoral fortune tangible, connecting a national historical name with a specific building and landscape.
